Virus research firm Panda Labs reports that more than 25 million new malware strains were created last year.
The security vendor's Annual Malware Report outlines this alarming number which far exceeds the 15 million malware versions identified in the past 20 years.
66 percent of the new malware specimens constitute banking trojans, which attempt to access banking information and data from your computer.
The next most popular category were scareware, also known as fake antivirus software, which attempt to alarm you into downloading "Antivirus" software that detects a virus on your machine, then charges you to 'fix' the infection. These fake software often open your computer to additional malware and virus' and should be avoided or removed immediately.
